DONATING WELL · FIELD NOTE

Shopping hours and donation hours are different questions

How to plan an op-shop donation without assuming that an open shop can accept every item.

Compiled by Find an Op Shop from linked operator sources. Reviewed 25 October 2026.

A shop can be open to customers while its donation area is full, closed or unable to handle a particular item. Check the branch’s acceptance rules and timing separately from its shopping timetable.

Three kinds of information to keep separate

InformationWhat it establishes
Shopping hoursThe normal published customer timetable.
Donation policyThe types, sizes or condition of items a charity says it accepts.
Current branch capacityWhether your donation can actually be accepted now; not established by a chain policy.

Two examples from this directory

Family Life’s chain guide says hand-carried bag-sized donations can go to shops during opening hours and lists exclusions. That still does not establish a branch’s capacity today.

Lifeline Warrnambool’s shop page explicitly publishes donation timing and advertises furniture pickup. We identify that as a store-level statement and leave current capacity unconfirmed.

Before loading the car

  1. Identify the branch that will receive the items.
  2. Check accepted items, condition and size restrictions.
  3. Ask about current capacity and any appointment or pickup arrangements.
  4. Keep donations with you if the branch cannot accept them; do not leave them outside a closed shop.

A “donation policy listed” filter means we have captured published guidance. It does not mean “accepting donations now.”

Put it into practice.

Compare published ranges, shopping hours and donation information separately.
